A Methodology for Assessing the Impact of the Interannual Variability of Wave Energy Resource on Electrical Energy Conversion

BigDataOcean contributes to the development of wave energy related solutions through publication of a scientific paper introducing the capabilities of the BDO Platform.

R&D Nester and UNINOVA are co-authors of a scientific paper related to the assessment of wave conditions. The paper is entitled “A Methodology for Assessing the Impact of the Interannual Variability of Wave Energy Resource on Electrical Energy Conversion” and was published in the SEST2018 Conference, which took place late 2018 In Seville, Spain. The paper is now available through IEEEExplore.

In this work, R&D Nester and UNINOVA demonstrated the capabilities that the BDO Platform will have, allowing a quick assessment of wave conditions in different locations and comparison of power generation of multiple wave energy converters (WEC’s). With a demonstrative goal, the presented paper includes a comparison between two devices, using multiple KPI’s, in two selected locations over the Atlantic coast of Portugal and including wave data for two consecutive years.

The performed comparison allows verifying the adaptability of each WEC to the selected location and obtain a quick comparison between multiple technologies, which can be used to foster more detailed site planning studies and WEC development studies.
