On the the 2nd and 3rd of October MarineTraffic represented the BigDataOcean project at the ESSnet Big Data project Face-to-Face meeting held in Piraeus, Greece. ESSnet Big Data is a project within the European statistical system (ESS), jointly undertaken by 22 partners.
Its objective is the integration of big data in the regular production of official statistics, through pilots exploring the potential of selected big data sources and through building concrete applications. Workpackage 4 (WP4) of ESSnet Big Data investigates whether real-time measurements of ship positions, as measured by AIS (Automatic Identification System), can be used to improve the quality and internal comparability of existing statistics and develop new statistical products. AIS data has the advantage of being accessible and standard worldwide and obtainable at European level. WP4 is carried out by representatives of five ESSnet Big Data partners: CBS (Statistics Netherlands), which is leading WP4, DST (Statistics Denmark), ELSTAT (Statistics Greece), SSB (Statistics Norway) and GUS (Statistics Poland). More background information on WP4 can be found here.
BigDataOcean and ESSnet have agreed to explore ways of exchanging knowledge, best practices and data regarding the maritime domain, and form a formal memorandum of understanding (MOU).
